Okay, don't know exactly where to put this, but this is for all the writers out there. I am sure Drowkat will move it if this isn't the best place for it.
If you are interested in a critique of a piece of lit, post a link here, along with any specifics you'd like me to look for. I will only look at pieces you ask me to, as I have to have time for my own work and stuff!
Also, if you have any questions about writing in general and the like, just drop a line here and I'll answer 'em.

Ok...a question.  What's your technique in character development? Do you draft up something like a bio to reference as you're writing or is it all free flow?

This is a very good question for any writer to ask another, as I see characters as the emissaries to your story world. If they are not believable, the whole story falls apart around them.
I develop two types of characters. There are main characters, and secondary characters.
Both kinds go through the first step: 'Concept' This is where I just usually sketch out what they look like. Maybe they're missing an ear, or something, talk with a lisp, whatever. I then write a short backstory. Just like, their name, how they got involved and that. As a note, this usually includes a bio for easy reference.
This is all I usually do with the secondary characters. When it comes to the main characters, I go all out. After my initial sketch, I try doing a few more, trying out different looks, before deciding on a final one.
Then comes the fun part! The development. I take the short backstory and start asking questions about it. The sort of 'what' and 'why' and 'how' so I get a better idea of the character. After that, I usually write a short piece with them. This I guess could be akin to a 'screen test' in film, where you're seeing if an actor wanting a role is right for it. If it works well, then they've got the part! If not, back to the drawing board!
Afterwards, if I think they're good enough, I start writing! If not, or they're like the lead of the story, I do some more! If they are the lead of the story, I usually try a 'character interview' which is literally, asking your character questions about themselves. The key to doing this right is to not think too much about what your character will say. As crazy as it sounds, if you do ask them a question, they will respond!
And when it's all said and done, I put them in. However, sometimes I come up with characters on a whim and write them in free flow. Sometimes you can get great characters this way!
