What piqued your interest in the Drow? When/where did you first encounter them?
For me, I suppose it started in video games. I got hooked on the Baldur's Gate series during the waiting period for a new Final Fantasy game and preferred to play the dark, lithe characters because, well...they just had the coolest look, sweet moves & the best weapons and magic of all the character selectees.
Honestly, I didn't really know too much about the Drow then...they were just some video game characters I had enjoyed & I didn't really give them to much thought after beating the game; it wasn't until Spiritsilver asked for help with a storyline for another friend's site did I really take an interest in them. Doing some hasty research for the story, I grew intrigued with this dominatrix-type culture of the D&D realm.
Well, she & I were a bit rushed to finish the storyline so I put off looking more into this fascinating society until after we completed the story. After that...I scoured online info banks about the culture for hours on end, printing up reference sheets of what made the drow tick, and annoying my hubby with random thoughts & ideas pertaining to them as images and story lines ran through my mind. I was hooked. _________________ "L'elamshin D'lil Ilythiiri Zhah Ulu Har'luth Jal !"

Mine is actually quite different. And I am trying to avoid what WotC has laid out for them as a fantasy species with my writing to an extent.
See, I had an idea of what a Drow was, thanks to my amounts of research into mythology and the like.
Now, I first heard the term when I was working on another kind of elf for my writing which looks, at a glance, very similar. Someone came up to me, seeing the image, and asked "Hey are those Drow?"
I said, "Um, no they're Necroplics."
After taking a look, I decided to include them in my writings as well, going the route of using mythology and stuff like that as a basis. Also for information, I went straight to Drowkat, for other info on them, and it wasn't long before I had worked 'em into both the North America and Europe storylines I'm working on!
Since then, they've become an important part of the story, in the form of a genetic offshoot of the typical 'surface' elves. I also call them by a different name now, the "Sidhe." They however, call themselves the "Dra'vul." The term "Drow" is the most common term for them though, as both them and 'surface' races call them that.
My Drow act a lot like the 'typical' ones, but there is a notable difference as if they're on the surface! Exposure to the sun, and the diet of surface dwellers creates nutrients in their bodies that they cannot usually get. This increases the amount of endorphins produced by the brain, and some other chemicals and stuff. In other words, it makes them a lot more friendly and fun to be around!
Case and point, one of my main Drow, Hadassa Valtress! _________________ "You can run, but you'll only die tired!"

Back in 1997 I created an online guild for elves only for the up and coming game called Everquest which was still in beta. I left that guild because after the game opened a pvp server I tried out an "evil" character just because it was different from my usuall choice of "lighty" elf. I also left them because I had banned all dark elves from the guild due to alignment reasons and then ironically fell in love with dark elves.
Well, I chose a necromantic dark elf. I was entranced by the misunderstood passion of the "dark team" and the dark elf became my main persona for years to come.
With all the adventures I had over the years as a dark elf , I absorbed every bit of knowledge I could about them. Knowing this would help in my role play I thought.
Well, long after ending my Everquest days, I still had a passion for the drow and studied their culture as did Queenflamewing. So it became a main subject of my art. I adopted the WotC version of the dark elves because it , in my mind, had the most solid foundation and consistent lore that I agreed with.
I could go on but that about sums it up.

LOL! I have that boxed set! (+ another partially there box) Ive got like 5 storage boxes of old dnd junk. I was gonna toss it all up on ebay but then the house flooded and it prolly all got file 13. But no big loss. Ive never actually used any of that crap (Except as a coaster. ad&d books make EXEMPLARY coasters & hot-plates. I am in fact using a copy of the "core rulebook 1" as a heat sink for my laptop. It's just the rght size!)
Wait... Paladium? Those awful old Rifts, generic fantasy & tmnt rpgs? You actually *PLAYED* those?

He lost a lot of money in a investment in developing an Computer game and a movie deal. He doing what he can. Honestly there nothing wrong with his game, it a little old school and has some balance issues or rather balance is left to the Gm to deal with. It not a bad system but for some reason get a very bad rap. It is reasonabily priced and largely remains paper back. _________________ Daimyo Shi

I played all of one rifts game- it lasted 2 sessions then kaputz. Hmm.. I should find that charrie a piccy. (http://www.freewebs.com/ultramarineblue/gamechars.htm) _________________ Johann Black,

| My first taste of Drow was "Homeland" by RA Salvatore shortly after it was published. After that I read everything I could from TSR on them. Yes I said TSR, I am that old that I remember it back then, and I do still own books that I bought then that actually say TSR on the spine. My fetish with drow then went to video games and other D&D. As for the whole mythical historical version of drow, I've never delved into that. Even if I did, I believe I would most likely still think of drow as the typical Forgotten Realms ones. I'm quirky like that.

Old? Because you remeber TSR? Most of my AD&D collection is TSR. _________________ Daimyo Shi

I was in 4th grade when Gary Gygax introduced D&D. I can still remember being utterly dazzled by the game. Every other boy I knew was instantly hooked. Back then though, parents were more puritanical and started to say playing the game was like devil worship, so we learned to hide it, at least until we were at that age when we could openly ignore them.

Yeah I said old, because most people ask "what is TSR?" when I mention it. I was in highschool when I started reading.
At least half of my collection says TSR on it. Including some of the other universes besides Forgotten Realms.
