I've seen many of these online drow name generators and the ones where you need a die to roll and was wondering which ones were the most accurate?
This one caught my eye the most because it gives both the character name & meaning and a house name with meaning- Random Drow Female Name Generator
The only thing is....as so many of them focus solely upon naming the females, where are the male drow name generators? _________________ "L'elamshin D'lil Ilythiiri Zhah Ulu Har'luth Jal !"

I didn't even know such things existed.
When I name my dark elves (keeping in mind I have 3 girls to like a dozen boys) there are a couple things I look for. We'll use my pet mercenary C'liss as an example.
His full name is "C'liss Zoi Larran Last of House Z'Larranzi"
You may notice several key things.
One is that as a whole the name is almost unpronouncable. (This is to ensure it is exotic enough & suits the elf.)
Two there are an awful lot of doubled letters. (why? because they're fun.)
Third his sur-name is a derivative of his house. (that should be self explanatory)
Lastly there are " ' ". (these are there to further tounge-twist the name but also look cool.)
Does C'liss' name mean anything special? No: his "friends" give him nicnames for that express purpose.
Also names that incude such letters as "k" "L""v" "x" "z" have been popular n he past decade or so. "Q" names are not as this is thought to be an unlucky sound. (and does not exist in some regional dialects.)
Another common trait is to name the elves in theme, most often with a favoured letter. (Another example: C'liss' girlfriend Zavita has a brother named Zinfandael & her father, Zarhan.)
If you want your dark elf's name to mean something specific may I sugest finding a name with the desired meaning in a nice exotic souding language and corupting it to your satisfaction with one or more of the above mentioned. _________________ Johann Black,

I am not sure where a reliable name genrator is but I have seen some patterns that can be used as guidelines. For example, females who are not matrons have normal names in general but matrons tend to be named after a negative emotion. All you need to do is translate that into drow.
All the name generators are based mainly upon known famous drow names. It would be best to use them as guidelines but not strictly speaking. I have noticed that Salvatore likes using lots of Zs and Xs (Drizzt, Zaknefeign, Jarlaxle, Jezz)) in his drow names but that is only an early pattern in his work.
I would say write down as many known male drow names that you know from canon as a guide line then work from imagination from that point.

I just throw letters together and see if it sounds cool. However, there's one thing that I use which helps.
Male drow names have to end in a consonant, where female names can end with anything, but commonly vowels.
Other than that, I don't have a name generator or anything. I just make it up as I go along! And it actually works very well! _________________ "You can run, but you'll only die tired!"

It's kinda funny- I was sorting dome backstory over the weekend & I noticed that all my dark elf girls have names that end in a vowel & all the boys (except 1) have name that end in a consonent.
(Girls: Zavita, Lareshia, Llyra, Liira, Yocchi, Vesli, etc)
(Boys: C'liss, Zarhan, Brenn, Xellian, Dae'lynn, etc.)
Got a kick outta that. _________________ Johann Black,

I try to avoid the ' because it looks a little too cheesy for my tastes if done too much. If I have to put them in, then I try to limit them.
A lot of my Drow names though don't need 'em! _________________ "You can run, but you'll only die tired!"

I have sat down and just said words and twisted them until it sounds like a name.
I have started with a nick name I wanted my char to have then made a full name from it.
Sometimes I picture what the character looks like, then I think of real names that fit and I twist them to sound elvish or what ever race I'm naming.
Pretty much I wing it. But I have named 2 of my RP characters from another site from a baby name book.
Xanthia is italian and it means yellow. She is a drow sage with pale yellow hair.
Zesiro is greek for first born twin. He is a drow assasin that killed his younger twin just to win his mother's affection or good graces as the case maybe.
It's more what you're comfortable with. Sometimes people don't like just making things up, and then there's others that don't like using real names at all. It's one of those to each his own kinda thing.

I have a thought with this: How about we compile a list of Drow names we can use if we need 'em? It would be a great resource for both artists and writers. _________________ "You can run, but you'll only die tired!"

I second that as well...but also I make sure it LOOKS good, and sounds good...or is un-pronounceable just to piss the GM off. _________________ Embrace the ebon night of the underdark.
